It will bring new opportunities to gear the structure of Finnish district heat production towards the goals of sustainable development. Previously, peak load plants have been using fossil fuels because there was no other technology available.

Finland's largest pellet-fired heating plant in Tampere, Finland, is based on a technological solution that is the first of its kind in the country. It will bring new opportunities to gear the structure of Finnish district heat production towards the goals of sustainable development.

The plant, supplied by Metso, is mainly fired with wood pellets and its heat output is around 33 MW. The plant has replaced some of the capacity of the oil and gas-fired boiler plants and has helped to reduce the CO2 emissions from the production of district heat. The plant has been producing environmentally friendly energy since December.

"The plant will help us to secure the competitiveness of district heat, lower CO2 emissions and improve our delivery reliability in the southern region of Tampere," says Antti-Jussi Halminen, managing director from Tampereen Energiantuotanto.

Metso's delivery comprised a complete turn-key boiler plant solution and Metso DNA automation system. The new plant operates unmanned with remote monitoring from the main control room of the Lielahti power plant. Operators are able to control the district heat production process and quickly respond to changes. The technology used at the plant is based on the pellet fuel being pulverized in separate grinding mills and burned in a pulverized combustion boiler. Pulverized pellet combustion is fairly new to Finland, but Metso has been using it in Sweden on a smaller scale.

Tampereen Energiantuotanto, a subsidiary of Tampere Power Utility, is responsible for the group's electricity and district heating production, maintenance and development. Increasing the proportion of renewable energy sources is part of Tampere Power Utility's strategy.

Read the articles of Renewablebiz and Canadian Biomass.

The theme area based on Mauri Kunnas’ Doghill books spans an entire hectare and boasts over 30 buildings. The area whose every detail and unique atmosphere have been honed to perfection took three years to plan. Those craving for speed can enjoy Särkänniemi’s new SpeedBoat attraction. The boat sports a top speed of 35 knots and utilises technology that enables nimble movement as well as 360° turns. The restaurant services, in turn, will be taken to new heights with Hans Välimäki’s Midhill restaurant. Offering top quality hamburgers, the restaurant is the first to be established in Tampere by Hans Välimäki, considered to be one of the best chefs in the country. The summer season of the Särkänniemi Adventure Park will begin on 27 April, and a grand Mayday event for the entire family will be held on 1 May.

“Each one of our new products and services for this summer significantly increases the appeal of our park. Särkänniemi Doghill, SpeedBoat and the Midhill restaurant are sure to interest a broad audience, which means we can expect a record-breaking summer,” says Miikka Seppälä, Managing Director of Särkänniemi.

Särkänniemi Doghill is an experience

The Särkänniemi Doghill is a theme area based on the characters of Mauri Kunnas, the most popular children’s author in Finland. The area has been constructed faithfully in the spirit of the books. “In the adventure park field, it is rare for the original author to be so involved in the design of the park. For example, it was Mauri’s idea to link alpacas to the story through Seaman Henrikson,” the Managing Director explains. At over €5 million, the theme area is Särkänniemi’s largest investment since the early 2000s.

Activities play a central role in the area, although it will not feature any actual rides. Visitors following Koirakeisari street from the Rakkimäki Square will arrive in the enchanting old town with a variety of boutiques. Café von Guggelböö is the perfect place to sit back and relax. The farm buildings offer a variety of activities from slides to milking cows and making cheese. The Paw Theatre stage will host daily plays produced by the TTT-Theatre. Drakkula’s Castle holds an adventure course utilising the latest technology in the field. The animal pens between Kutukoivenkaarre and the stable on Ingentingentie are home to over 20 species of animals, including the new mangalitza pig Maurix.

“Särkänniemi Doghill offers something for all senses. The area will feature hundreds of details, and the experience is completed with specifically designed sounds and ambience. Our wish was to enable people of all ages to experience Kunnas’ unique storybook world. Särkänniemi Doghill is one of a kind in Finland and could form a theme park on its own,” Seppälä emphasises.

Särkänniemi Doghill has been planned and designed for three years by a team comprised mostly of Särkänniemi employees. The American company Bruce D. Robinson Design Group, which specialises in theme parks, played an important role in the design of the visual appearance and activities. Mauri Kunnas was represented in the design process by Leena Carelse, who is also responsible for the interior decoration. The architectural and primary design was handled by the Tampere-based architect’s office Petri Pussinen Oy. The main contractor was Juvia Oy, which is situated in the Pirkanmaa region.

The area will be opened to the public at the same time as the park itself on 27 April. However, the finishing efforts will continue through May. Särkänniemi Koiramäki is accessible with the Adventure Key, Kiddie Key and Mini-Key.

SpeedBoat Särkänniemi combines water and speed

“We have long considered using the element of water better than before, and we also wanted to provide something new for speed lovers. SpeedBoat Särkänniemi will meet this need perfectly as the ride is breathtakingly wild,” Miikka Seppälä says.

SpeedBoat Särkänniemi is a super jet boat manufactured in New Zealand. It is the first of its kind in Europe. The craft is propelled by two 250 hp Volvo motors installed side by side, along with two Hamilton 213 jet drives. The direction and power of each jet can be controlled independently. This means that the boat can turn 180° at travel speed and spin on the spot. The craft does not feature traditional propellers. The speedboat boasts 500 hp and a top speed of 35 knots (over 60 km/h). Thanks to its unique motor technology, the craft is more environmentally-friendly and quiet than other similar boats.

At approximately 8 metres in length, the boat can hold 24 passengers at a time. Tickets for SpeedBoat Särkänniemi can be purchased at the Adventure Park, and the boat is also available by reservation. It will be introduced at Midsummer.

Hans Välimäki’s restaurant comes to Särkänniemi Adventure Park

Särkänniemi’s food services will be further diversified with the opening of the new Midhill restaurant with Hans Välimäki at the helm. Awarded with two Michelin stars, Välimäki is the most internationally famous Finnish chef, and Särkänniemi’s Midhill is his first restaurant in Tampere. The new restaurant, which will be opened on the premises of Café-restaurant Särkkä, will feature 120 seats and a terrace that is perfect for admiring the bustling ride area. The concept of the Midhill restaurant was inspired by similar establishments in North America, and its main focus is providing a variety of top-quality hamburgers.

New show for the Dolphinarium

“The dolphin show has always been one of our most popular attractions. The new show has been designed with American experts Thad Lacinak and Angi Millwood, who have years of experience from Florida’s Seaworld, for example. We and our trainers are extremely excited – the new elements, structure and carefully designed light and sound arrangements will take the show to a whole new level,” enthuses Tiia Ojansivu, Customer Services Director in charge of the Dolphinarium.

Ticket reform will clarify ticket products

The ticket products will go through some changes for the summer of 2013. The Mini-Key for persons under 100 cm tall will be launched as a new product. The five-euro Mini-Key will include access to the park, all attractions and rides that are suitable those under 100 cm tall. The selection will continue to feature the Kiddie-Key for persons between 100 cm and 120 cm tall, and the Adventure Key for those over 120 cm in height. Children under three years of age can access the area and attractions free of charge. Individual ride and attraction tickets will no longer be sold. “We wanted to simplify our selection of ticket products. Nearly all our customers purchase a key, so we thought it best to keep the cost of the keys low despite our considerable investments,” Managing Director Seppälä says. You can receive a discount on ticket products by purchasing them in advance. The prices of the ticket products are listed on the Särkänniemi website at http://www.sarkanniemi.fi/fi/liput-ja-hinnat/liput-sarkanniemeen.

Särkänniemi’s summer season will begin at 11 am on 27 April. The park will open next on 1 May with the popular Mayday family event. During the day, the Adventure Park stage will feature acts, such as Hevisaurus, Pikku Kakkonen’s traffic policemen Maltti and Valtti, as well as newcomer of the Tampere rock scene, Rockwalli. In addition, visitors can experience the Cage Riders show, which features two daredevil motorcyclists riding inside a ball of death with a diameter of 6 metres.

Särkänniemi opening hours around Mayday 2013:
Sat 27 April 11 am to 6 pm
Tue 1 May 11 am to 9 pm
Rides are closed from Sun 28 April to Mon 30 April

Additional information:

Tampereen Särkänniemi Ltd.
Managing Director Miikka Seppälä, tel. +358 207 130 201, miikka.seppala@sarkanniemi.fi

Director (Sales, Marketing and Communications) Tiina Mörttinen, tel. +358 207 130 211, tiina.morttinen@sarkanniemi.fi

The film’s world premiere was held at the Berlin Film Festival in 2012, and it has already been seen by more than a million viewers around the world.

This is the second time the AACTA Awards have been held.

www.aacta.org

All buildings will be nearly life-size, and all visitors will really be stepping into the world of Doghill when they enter this area,” said Miikka Seppälä, the CEO of Särkänniemi Adventure Park. “The American design agency, BDR Design (who is one of the leading theme park design agencies and already known for their design of Angry Birds Land), is responsible for the design of the area. The way in which things are done is a clear factor for the region's competitiveness. We must do things in a way that makes us internationally competitive,' states Tredea Managing Director Päivi Myllykangas.

She stresses that there must be a shared regional vision and message along with shared methods for communication with audiences. There already is a look: All Bright!

'Collaborating regardless of differing views requires patience. The important part is to act and communicate with audiences as a team. Tredea is and wants to be a process holder and a reliable and open team player.'
What is the Tampere way?

Now and in the future, many things require creative and innovative team work.

What is the Tampere City Region model for dealing with the structural change of the IT industry? The related work is off to a good start, thanks to collaboration between the public and private sector for further improvement in overall control and efficiency. And what is the status of the Innovative Cities (INKA) programme, which will follow the Centre of Expertise Programme? Also, how should we organise business services in the Tampere City Region? They must be clear and easy for businesses to understand. Could we even turn them into a competitive advantage for the region?

The second area of focus, development of the existing competence, is centred on the technology industries, especially the engineering and electronics industries.

Myllykangas says: 'Predictions state that the position of the technology industry in the business structure will remain strong, and it is a key industry in export – including service export – which is very important for us.'

Indeed, the third area of emphasis is strengthening of service business. Businesses have calculated that keeping employment stable necessitates development in this area. Myllykangas says that both of Tampere's universities must immediately start jointly building a service-business development centre.

The fourth area of focus is internationality. Tredea supports 'invest in' activities, actively targets Russia, and helps international students build connections to industry and working life.

www.tampereallbright.fi

Growth has been rapid; the number of new games industry companies established in the last three years alone amounts to 20, and the number of new jobs created in the area totals around 130.

Manse Games is a regional support project that aims to boost the games industry in Tampere, Finland, and believes that the growth will continue. The number of games industry companies in Tampere is estimated to equal 38 by the end of 2012, employing altogether 200 people. In reference, there are 160 game companies in Finland.

According to Project Manager Suvi Latva from Manse Games, the region holds many advantages for games industry companies. The already-established ecosystem supports companies expanding to or starting up in the region. She also sees the industry’s sense of community as a strong point.

― The Finnish games industry community is very tight-knit. The domestic markets are practically non-existent, so the companies aim at the international markets, Latva explains.

― As a result, the Finnish games industry companies compete very little among themselves. If one faces a problem, the others help, and companies also exchange services and perform subcontracting jobs for each other. Entrepreneurs also help each other out by letting potential partners know about other companies.

Lower costs and somewhat easier recruiting than in the Helsinki region are seen as additional benefits. As a sign of the attractiveness of the Tampere region, Rovio established its second office in Finland in Tampere.

Latva also points out that the games business in the region is not as young as one may think. Universomo, established in 2003, employed up to 60 people in Tampere, before the studio was closed down by THQ, which had acquired the company a couple of year earlier.

Nearly all the companies in Tampere focus on mobile games, but plans to move to console and PC games are also in the works. This trend is popular as most game developers in Finland focus on mobile platforms.

The games business is expected to grow on a national scale. Suomen Pelinkehittäjät, a Finnish association for game developers, and Neogames Finland, the Centre of Game Business, Research and Development, will publish a report on the games industry in Finland early in 2013. According to the report, the industry is expected to employ some 8 500 people by 2020. Approximately 5 000 of these will be working in the core of the games industry. Net sales are foreseen to increase to EUR 1.5 billion.

Read more at:
www.mansegames.fi

These include the implementation of a crowdfunding platform, the activation of business angel and risk investor networks and coaching entrepreneurs and angel investors. The aim is to create a financially viable operating model and a concept that can be used throughout Finland.

— We offer the most solid financing solution package in the whole of Finland. It is not only a tool for managing structural change and promoting entrepreneurship, but also a means to ensure the quality of startup and growth companies and to improve the companies’ chances of achieving their growth objectives, explains Seppo Haataja, head of programme development at Open Tampere.

— We are looking to achieve significant development in financing and coaching practices in order to create new jobs and new business. It isn’t only about money; it’s about the mass training of the entire field.

Establishing a regional fund is the most important element in the project. Although the fund is centred in Tampere, it can also invest in companies elsewhere in the country. Less than half of the fund is public money, more than half comes from companies. Company-specific investments can range between 50 000 to one million euros. Another objective is to double the number of viable companies being created.

— The fund is different because it involves solid sales, marketing, export and productisation coaching, which startup and growth companies need to succeed, says Kai Hämäläinen from Navaro 245 Oy, one of the companies building up the regional fund.

Accelerando’s Jussi Heinilä, who activates business angel and risk investor networks for the Startup Tampere project, believes that the time is right for the project due to the shift taking place in the ICT industry.

— Private investors and private equity funds have perked up, the need for growth companies has been understood and tax incentives are in place for angel investments, also in Finland, Heinilä says.

According to him, the aim is to have six foreign private equity investors visit Tampere during the spring and attract dozens of private equity investments in Tampere-based growth companies over the next couple of years.

A crowdfunding service is also being created within the project, providing a meeting point for companies seeking financing and investors interested in promoting the companies’ development. The service offers an easy way of involving both average citizens and international investors in the financing of companies.

The companies additionally receive coaching in business operations and sales.
